Voice Drawing

Yes, 'voice drawing'! You've tried soduku, 'work' and throwing snowballs at young children, so here's a new way to pass the time..

Use the power of your speakbox to create a continuous line drawing – just talk loudly, sing quietly, or whisper suggestively to create all manner of directional shapes. We didn't find voice drawing too easy, but ditto for GTA IV and look how good that was.

One commentator (Jesse) suggests that "It's fascinating to watch it draw out some of your favorite songs". Perhaps we'll give that a go..

The Illustrated Ape Arrives!

Just the other day we saw the release of our editorial debut, The Illustrated Ape "Photographers of the Urban Apocalypse" issue. As our first step into the world of magazine art-direction, it's been an absolutely amazing process. The editors, Mike Sims & Christian Pattison, gave us total freedom with the issue. + Given the opportunity to commission photographers of our choice, we were able to meet some great people – whose help we are eternally grateful for!

For those of you that aren't familiar with the publication, it's a creative showcase of "fiction, poetry, pictures, and pop." Better still, there's an About Ape section on the website where a more thorough picture is painted.

A sneak peak

Whilst our issue explores photography, Ape has previously been solely illustration based. Though our somewhat abstract headers borrow a lot from the illustrative nature of the magazine's past. On that note, we also ran a feature whereby we asked illustrators to create a photographic self portrait. So, hopefully the issue's transition to photography isn't too revolutionary.

From buttered bottoms to Ape 'tart cards', we tried to have a bit of fun with the mag, though as the "Photographers of the Urban Apocalypse" theme would suggest, the humour can be a bit dark in places. But anyway, we'd love for you to check it out – It was lots of fun to make, so hopefully it's fun to read!

If you're passing a Borders, Magma, or perhaps a Modern Tate - you should be able to see the mag (There's a full list of stockists on the site). Alternatively you might even want to purchase something online/ from the ape back-catalogue, try the Ape Shop if so.

Ryohei Hase

Hey, check this guy out. Takes us back to the days of fantasy art...which as it turns out never left us. Anyway, we're still fans – big fans. Hase's words of wisdom "My strongest area is realistic fantasy art...trying to express feelings which difficutl to show in words."

Keep on expressing yourself Hase, we luvvit.

"Go forward and forward"
Ryohei Hase

Whilst we're talking about fantasy art, can't not mention Hajime Sorayama. Remember first discovering one of his books, 'Venom', a few years back and being blown away - some serious patience (& skill of course) I'm sure.

Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs

We first made friends with the Totally Enormous (and pretty sexy) Extinct Dinosaurs way back when they contributed to the Tate Tracks event, responding to a Dieter Roth canvas with their usual magic/Dino-fuzz. We've since shared many a pina colada in their company. Listening to them the other night, we came home and drew a portrait of them (Above).

Illustration Magazine

This Spring we've been featured in everyones favourite Illustration Magazine called 'Illustration Magazine'. Here's a scan...

The magazine has a focus on famous illustrators of the past, though, as shown with us, they are keen to explore newer material too. They said: "We wanted to explore children’s book illustrators alongside those who work on adult novels and classics - or even political manifestos and train timetables. We wanted to consider the humorous, the serious, the sinister and the surreal."

Thanks for having us 'Illustration Magazine.' Look forward to seeing you again soon : )

Juan Francisco and his Biro

We haven't been able to find out much about this artsist. All we know is that both these amazing images are created with only one tool, the humble Biro.
We wondered if each was the result of a very long telephone doodle.
We love it when people create amazing things with such unexpected equipment.

James & Joe & Yule

Merry Christmas!

To celebrate the wonder of this 25th day of days, we've made a christmas party of our own:

http://www.jamesandjoe.co.uk/christmas

The illustration features just some of the many people who've been a part of our year - but the list is far from comprehensive. So we apologize that we seem to have cruelly snubbed you. Remember, we still love you truly, madly, and deeply.

To zoom in and out of the page you can use the controls at the top left, it's also possible to click and drag the image with your mouse. Explore it exactly as you would a google map...or any of our other pages.

Anyway, back to our champagne breakfast...

Garbage Pail Kids

James Flames & Joltin' Joe
Just two of the brilliantly disgusting characters from our childhood favorites the Garbage Pail Kids. As soon as we found Barren AARON's GPK World that sweet smell of bubble gum from a freshly opened pack of cards came rushing back up our nostrils.
Barren AARON's site has a huge archive of nearly all the cards, wrapping, promotional posters, and loads more Garbage pail related goodies to keep your inner child happy for hours. They have even listed all the character's names and where you can find them. Its great stuff, have a browse.

The Celebrity Image

Eagerly awaiting the new Indiana Jones movie, "Indiana Jones and The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" (...catchy title), we were delighted to find a new selection of old Ghanaian film posters, featuring one of Harrison Ford looking as sharp as ever....

In search of more gold, we also found a nice grouping of Belarusian film posters. The delicacy with which such celebs as Drew Barrymore, Jack Black, and Lindsay Lohan are portrayed suggests the Belarusian artists are perhaps not quite sticklers for realism.

A more intentional twist on the celebrity image can be found in the (fairly) new Top Trumps cards, Hollywood Zombies, again featuring a less than flattering rendition of Barrymore.

Monaux/ Karl Kwasny is an Australian based illustrator who's doing some cool stuff. In his words: "Hello, I'm Karl. I was born in 1984", meet Karl more intimately at his website.

A nice collection of body art photography, always envied people who are willing to turn themselves into a canvas like this. Quite iconic sometimes, the first shot pushes that angle - pretty powerful stuff, whereas the second just looks soft and beautiful. Tatsumi Takuya's website has quite a few examples.

Drawing game

This video really reminds me of a game me and Joe used to play in lectures, where we would finish off each others drawings then pass it back and it would go on and on, for a whole professional skills lecture. No wonder thats probably our weakest grade, however those lecrues did spawn the birth of James&Joe.

Alex Trochut

Some nice lettering from Barcelona, Having seen his CMYK festival book - we soon fell for Trochut, who is a firm believer in "More is more" illustration, an attitude which is refreshingly done well here.
